Signs That You’re Ready to Move Up the Corporate Ladder

Posted on September 7, 2020 by Burny

There is immense pressure on anyone who wishes to step up the corporate ladder, both internal and external. Even if we have excelled in our careers for many years, we are all vulnerable to the burden of self-doubt, and the added pressure of competing for those limited spots can deter even the best of us from feeling confident about our chances.

In some companies, only the executives decide who should climb the ranks to leadership positions – and when it happens. However, in the vast majority of companies, the availability is public knowledge and anyone who wants it must be ready to demonstrate their value, and put themselves forward.

If it’s the latter, and you are wondering whether or not, you should go for it, then look for these signs to tell you if it’s time to nominate yourself.

You Always Receive Commendations

Whether it’s from your boss or fellow employees, commendations represent some of the greatest moments in your professional life. Not only does it show that you are exceeding expectations, but it also a great way of proving to yourself how valuable you really are to the company.

Praise isn’t simply handed out; it’s only for people who have truly earned it, which means that having plenty of commendations under your belt is a great sign that it is time to progress.

You Want to be at Your Best All the Time

We all perform better when we love the job we are doing. If you are always eager to show what you are capable, then it’s a wonderful sign – both for you, and your employer – that you value your position in the company, and will continue to apply yourself in order to achieve the best possible results.

You Understand What It Takes to be a Leader

It’s one thing to excel in a job as a regular member of a team, but being a leader is a very different ballgame. It requires different a different skillset, an ability to engage your team, motivate others, organize your ideas, and make your vision a reality.

You can observe what your team leader does and see if it is something you can see yourself doing, too. If it is, you may well be ready for that promotion.

You Have the Same Vision as the Company

It’s challenging to give your all to a company when you don’t share the same vision and values. Your plans won’t be in line with what the company wants to happen; the struggle will always be there, and it hinders you from being your best.

Understand the direction of the company and determine if that is what you want to dedicate yourself to.

You Can Manage People Well

Being a leader means that you can deal with plenty of different – or even challenging – personalities. Even if you’re likable, you won’t be able to please everyone; it takes a great deal of empathy and patience to manage a team of diverse personalities.

If you can handle this challenge, it’s time to step up. If not, it is something you can easily work on over time.

You Don’t Fear Speaking in Public

You might have to speak in public regularly; from leading meetings between employees to pitching your ideas to potential investors, if it’s something you feel comfortable doing, you will find your job much easier.

If you are not quite there yet, then you should practice first. It also helps if you have a projector ceiling mount in the office to practice presenting your thoughts, before your real audience arrives.

These signs offer a great way to gauge your suitability for a higher role within your company, but remember that you are your own best resource; carefully consider the additional responsibilities. If you feel ready, it’s time to take the plunge.
